Since lockdown began in March 2020, radical interdisciplinary performance troupe La Pocha Nostra has creatively reinvented their practice with their global community – including virtual spoken word solos, poetry slams, intellectual salons, classroom visits, international performance workshops & festivals  – involving all Pocha Members and special guests from around the world.

For this special podcast episode SFAI invites La Pocha Nostra’s Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Balitronica to offer a sampling of their process of virtual reinvention by sharing with us some poetic, political and philosophical reflections of our times. What does it mean to be an American artist during lockdown? Where is the border between despair and hope? What is radical democracy and how can we all participate in it?

For Episode 3 of our Tilt Podcast, SFAI Residency Director Toni Gentilli talks with 2020 Labor Residents May Maylisa Cat, Millian Pham Lien Giang, and Mimi Bai. May, Millian, and Mimi are all Asian diasporic artists working to navigate and give form to the invisible and emotional labor of assimilation, codeswitching, and cultural production and consumption in America. They discuss how their creative practices help them to heal and transform the traumatic intergenerational experiences of being estranged, exoticized, and excluded by colonial, patriarchal, and capitalist systems.

CONVERSATIONS / Unprecedented (Again)

To mark SFAI’s 35th anniversary, our inaugural event entitled Conversations: Unprecedented (Again), features SFAI alumni. Artists Veronica Jackson and Christopher Kojzar, will be in conversation with artist-moderator Elizabeth Burden, to talk about their art and aesthetics, the wonder-sleights of being simultaneously invisible and hypervisible, and being hyphenated artists in this moment—artist-interpreters, artist-researchers, artist-archivists, artist-historians.

 

CONVERSATIONS

Join SFAI artists and alumni, community organizers and leaders, as we engage one another online on topics related to current events and our annual theme. Conversations events will include panel conversations and interactive presentations, and will demonstrate how these issues manifest within our local, national, and global communities – as well as how artists and culture-bearers are shaping the dialogue and providing positive impact.
